Get to Know: St Andrews Brewing Co.

With two venues in the heart of town, St Andrews Brewing Company has gone from a garden shed start-up to holding an established reputation as one of the local brewing industry’s frontrunners in just seven short years.

We caught up with Robbie Docherty, General Manager, to talk all things beer, beaches, and what makes St Andrews Brewing Company a must-visit for tourists and locals alike.

What’s the St Andrews Brewing Company story?

We started as a one-man operation about seven years ago, brewing beer in a garden shed and selling it at local farmers’ markets. The company continued to grow and after three years we moved to our current space in St Andrews, next to the Botanic Gardens. Fast forward to 2018 and we now have three restaurants across Scotland, with two on the way. We’re still producing our own St Andrews Company beer and have also recently our own gin brand “St Andrews Gin Co.” in three different flavours.

What are you renowned for?

Good beer, good food and local ingredients.

What is the house favourite?

Our core range is really popular – especially the Crail Ale and Fife Gold.

What is something many people don’t know about the company?

We try to use local produce as much as possible in our food and drinks. Because of this, the most popular items on the menu tend to change seasonally.

What can people expect when visiting you?

Our venues pride themselves on being relaxed, family-friendly spaces. Customer service is at the heart of everything we do and our brilliant and knowledgeable team work hard to make every visit a memorable one.

What’s next for the business?

There’s a lot of very exciting things going on at St Andrews Brewing Co. right now. We’re currently opening a second pub in St Andrews as well as our first venue in Dundee. We’re also in the process of expanding our brewery thanks to recent crowdfunding investments – going from making 200,000 pints a year to over 1,000,000! This is allowing us to branch out into new styles of beer, with the first St Andrews Brewing Co. lager coming soon!

What is your favourite thing about St Andrews?

I love the small town feel St Andrews has whilst also being so internationally renowned.

What are the people of St Andrews like?

There’s a great mix of people - it’s a really good place to live and work.

Where is the best view in St Andrews?

There’s a lot of amazing views in and around St Andrews! I would say the best are either the Fife Coastal Path where you can look down onto the harbour and the castle, or a walk through the Lade Braes. The town’s beaches are stunning too – Castle Sands is probably my favourite.

The Walled Gardens features one and two-bedroom apartments and is jointly marketed by Rettie & Co. and locally by Thorntons. Prices start at £180,000.

An innovative shared ownership scheme offers buyers the chance to purchase 75%, with the option to buy the further 25% after one year residence.
