Get to know: Luvians

Luvians was found by three Scottish-Italian brothers: Vincent, Luigi and Antonio in 1981. Now, with an ice-cream parlour and spirits shop in St Andrews, and another outlet in Cupar, they have built up a reputation over the years as one of the town’s main whisky and wine specialists. We quizzed Bottle Shop Manager, Archie McDairmid, on house favourites, their extensive range of whiskies and wines, plus the best place to catch a St Andrews’ sunset.

What is Luvians known for?

Our stores offer an extensive variety of products from a great selection of ice-cream to the finest wines and whiskies, plus an impressive range of many other alcoholic delights.

What are you renowned for?
My store is known as the Bottle Shop. We invite all to taste and enjoy our extensive range of single malt whiskies, the wide selection of beer and fine wines. Luvians is also renowned for their deli and ice-cream parlour.

What is the house favourite?

It varies throughout the year. In summer, the Bottle Shop is a great stop among tourists who enjoy our great selection of whisky. In winter, wine is the most favoured drink. However, sundaes and cones are enjoyed all year round.

What is the most interesting thing about the company?

As independent bottlers, we can collaborate with different distilleries. This grants us an opportunity to offer hundreds of different single malt whiskies to a variety of different tastes.

What is something many people don’t know about the company?

We are proud to host a lot of different events. One of the best known is the wine fair where we invite wine lovers to taste and indulge in our selection of more than 200 different wines. Apart from that, we also host smaller events such as wine, whisky and other spirit classes.

What is new for the business?

We have a couple of things in the pipeline including Brew 2018 which is our beer fair.  We also recently collaborated with Eden Mill to produce our Graduation Gin which marked the Bottle Shop’s 21st birthday.

What can people expect when visiting you?

We pride ourselves with great customer service; our staff are knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic. We aim to make every aspect of the customer experience a memorable adventure. We always have samples open for customers to taste, meaning we can easily suggest bottles and recommend the best whiskies to suit their tastes. It’s like walking into Aladdin’s Cave at our shop – there are so many bottles to choose from.

When is the best time to visit?

Summer is my favourite time of the year, but I think April and May, undoubtedly, would be the best time to visit. This is when we have lots of tourists and students in the town. It’s busy and the atmosphere is buzzing.

What is it like to work in St Andrews?

St Andrews is everything you could imagine. There’s a good community spirit and a lot of events throughout the year.

What is your favourite thing about St Andrews?

Well, I’m a big golfer and we are lucky enough to live next to seven big golf courses. The Old Course is open to the public on a Sunday so you can find people walking their dogs and enjoying a stroll.

Where is the best view in St Andrews?

For all that St Andrews has to offer, the best view, in my opinion, is from the Fife Coastal Path as you head south out of town. You can look down onto East Sands and see the harbour, cathedral and castle all at once. If you can take in the sunset there in summer then it’s mesmerising.

What are the people of St Andrews like?

It is a busy place to live in, however, you can always feel community spirit when everybody’s lending a hand - like recently with the weather. Locals were out with their shovels helping clear the snow.
