Get to Know: Carol

We are excited to welcome Carol Matthews to our team at The Walled Gardens in St Andrews.

Carol joined our team nearly five months ago and is employed by Rettie & Co. She is the friendly face prospective buyers see when they visit our luxury apartments.

We caught up with Carol to find out a little bit more about her day-to-day role at The Walled Gardens and her four-legged friend.

How long have you been at The Walled Gardens?

I started my role as New Homes Sales Executive, on 24 May, so I haven’t been here that long. Before that, I was on the ‘re-sale’ side, as an Estate Agent.

My role at The Walled Gardens is to sell these beautiful luxury retirement apartments to people who are looking for independent living within St Andrews, in a peaceful location, and within walking distance of the town and amenities.

What’s your day-to-day job like?

I work from Friday – Monday, and there is always something to do. The development signage attracts visitors to The Walled Gardens, so no appointment is necessary in order to view our Show Apartments. No one day is ever the same and I enjoy that element of surprise.

What sets The Walled Gardens apart?

The apartments are ideally situated within walking distance of the town. It’s all about independent living and the freedom to come and go as you please.

The apartments have a specific criteria which must be adhered to for the benefit of others.

It must be the owner’s main residence and the minimum age is 60 years old. Above this, apartments are not permitted to be rented out. Residents find this extremely reassuring.

Bield offer a service called Bield Response 24 and residents have the option of subscribing to it. As your needs may change, this service is designed to make life safer and provide reassurance for our customers and their families and is available 24 hours a day over 365 days a year.

What do you think people’s first impressions are of the apartments?

When someone walks into what may be their future home, they expect ‘the dream’.

Quiet, modern, spacious, plush, secure (with video entry phone), Alno kitchens and Bosh integrated appliances, and Villeroy & Boch designed shower rooms with ceramic Porcelanosa tiles. The premium shower itself is by the leading bathroom designer, Hansgrohe.

Apartments are wheelchair friendly, with wide doors and plenty of room to manoeuvre.

What is the community like?

We have a good mix of residents, with some locals who have downsized, from within St Andrews itself.

So far, I have met around half of the owners, and they are lovely.

Why is St Andrews the ideal place to live?

St Andrews is a relatively busy little town that it is known globally.

It is the ‘Home of Golf’ and has beautiful beaches, a botanic garden, the Byre Theatre, a dainty cinema, a leisure centre, restaurants, hotels, a bus station, and includes wonderful walks right on its doorstep.

Staying at The Walled Gardens is ideal for exploring and is the perfect base by foot to where you want to go.

Students bring a lot to the town and we have a lot to thank them for. Prince William and Kate Middleton were students here.

From young students, to post-grads, to golfers, including numerous celebrities and many tourists who visit, they all love St Andrews and are in awe of its history and beauty.

How expensive is it to stay in St Andrews?

St Andrews can be an expensive place to stay. It’s a premium, well-renowned little town.   Shared ownership is an increasingly appealing option for people wishing to downsize and release equity for retirement years.

What do you find is the biggest issue for downsizers coming to The Walled Gardens?

A number of residents who have bought an apartment at The Walled Gardens, and who have come from larger properties, have had to be ruthless when it came to deciding what to pack. Many have lived in their home for numerous years and have accumulated possessions and even clothes (I’m guilty for that!). I keep telling myself that “It might come in handy one day” or “I might fit into that again”. That day never comes though.

They have made the choice to change their lifestyle for the better. They want minimalistic and brand new. One thing has to give, in order to achieve their dream.

When you aren’t being kept busy at the apartments, what do you do outside of work?

I have a beautiful Border Collie whom I rescued from Dogs Trust when she was a puppy. We love going for nice forest walks, however, the beach and water is her favourite.

We are best pals and go everywhere together (apart from work of course, which is a pity).  She is at the centre of everything I do. I wouldn’t change that for the world.

I also like eating out with my friends and love going away on holidays where my wee doggy can come too. I am looking forward to a nice hotel break to The Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry. I’ve been wanting to go for years, so I’m very excited!

The Walled Gardens features one and two-bedroom apartments and is jointly marketed by Rettie & Co. and locally by Thorntons. Prices start at £180,000.

An innovative shared ownership scheme offers buyers the chance to purchase 75%, with the option to buy the further 25% after one year residence.
